Sample Credit Inquiry Dispute Letter

-This letter is used for a very specific purpose: to ask a person or company to justify, prove authorization for, or remove an “inquiry” (a “hit” or “pull” of a credit report) by an unauthorized person or company. This approach rarely works on its own, but this letter can serve as evidence when following up with a credit reporting agency such as equifax or experian.

Re: Unauthorized Credit Inquiry, TransUnion and Experian, 5/07

To Whom It May Concern:,

I recently received a copy of my above-referenced credit report(s). The credit report(s) showed a credit inquiry (on the above-referenced date) by your company that I do not recall authorizing. I understand that you shouldn’t be allowed to put an inquiry on my file unless I have authorized it. Please have this inquiry removed from my credit file because it is making it very difficult for me to acquire credit. Your action constitutes a violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act and is illegal an injurious to my credit rating.

If you find that I have erred, and you did have my authorization to inquire into my credit report, then please send me proof of this in writing.

Otherwise, I insist that you immediately contact the above-referenced credit bureau to remove this inquiry from my credit report.
